Imagine what would be going on right now if Trump had lost the electoral vote, but was leading by almost 3 million votes in the actual count.
The media would be running stories 24x7 about the GOP’s challenges and fights on all fronts against this “shocking assault on democracy”. The names and addresses of Electors would have been published by now, along with their pictures and pictures of their families. The howling cybermobs would be hounding these people night and days with death threats. It is quite possible some would have already been attacked or killed. Cities would be on fire and rioting would be occurring across the Confederacy and in the Militia states.
Legions of lawyers would have been unleashed upon the courts challenging every aspect of the vote count in every county, in every state in the union. Special sessions of state legislatures would be convened to “investigate voting irregularities” in 2/3s of the states at least, while in the capitol, a House special committee would be issuing subpoenas as fast as the printers could churn them out.
Scores of editorials would be written by the Beltway press about the need for the immediate elimination of the Electoral College and yielding to the “democratic will of the people”. Vichy Democrats like Joe Manchin would be a regular on Fox News, excoriating his party for any refusal to submit to the demands of the “popular vote”.
And should the Democrats dare to defy this general rebellion by the “right” thinking people of America, articles of impeachment would be drawn up even before Clinton took office, and would be the first thing voted on the first day the Congress met.
The Republicans would fight this every bloody inch of the way, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, and would NEVER stop.
Look, I know we are operating under the burden of being sane here, but come on, our leaders are really not even putting up a token fight. Instead, for the second time in 16 years, we have won the election, but due to blatant partisan actions, (in this case, up to and including treason), our leaders are simply walking quietly off the stage muttering and whining about the unfairness, leaving the rest of us to our fates, secure in the knowledge that they won’t share it. Whatever happens to women, Latinx, Native Americans, Blacks, undocumented immigrants, children, the sick, the elderly, the poor, the LGBTQ community, et al, will not in anyway affect our leader’s day to day lives. Those still in Washington will still collect a nice pay check and enjoy generous health care courtesy of the tax payers, followed by an ample pension and wonderful six or seven figure lobbying jobs when they “leave public service”
What awaits the rest of us?
Trump will loot the public treasury, public lands and public resources. He will sell his influence and his favor to the highest bidder. Putin will get his half trillion dollar oil deal with Exxon, while we get a broiling cesspool of pestilence, famine and war to live in.
And there will be war, lots of war.
And soon.
Middle Eastern oil fields need to be destroyed to bolster oil prices to benefit Russian and American oil oligarchs. The angry poor that will become legion in this country when the economy collapses and health care, clean air, and clean water vanish, will need a “foreign enemy” to hate in order to keep them distracted. Those enemies will, of course, need to be rooted out at home, as well as abroad, along with their supporters. Corporate jail cells won’t fill themselves you know.
And who will stop Trump?
Once in power the only way to remove him is impeachment, and that is something the GOP will NEVER do. They understand that anyone who aids Trump will be rich beyond the dreams of avarice, but those who cross him will be ground into a bloody slurry.
This is the Hitler all over again, but this time it does not end “happily” with just a hundred million dead and then suicides in a bunker and Nuremberg for afters. No, this time the death toll will be in the billions and there will be no “Judgment at Nuremberg”. This time we are are WILLINGLY, and with complete malice aforethought, giving our Dictator To Be the most powerful weapons ever created on this planet. An entire arsenal of thousands of atomic weapons to use at his merest caprice.
And again, who will stop him from using them? And once they are used, the only judgment that will remain will be revenge in the form of our enemies nuclear retaliation.
To paraphrase Obiwan Kenobi, “Who is madder? The mad man? Or the mad mob who gave him the launch codes?”
